About

Members: This originally started as a one-person project where I did all the translating, cleaning, typesetting, etc. myself, but now most of my projects are collaborations, which means I can get stuff out a lot faster. I was a professional translator for over ten years, but now just translate as a hobby (both here and on my lyrics site), though my current job does involve lots of speaking Japanese.

Releases: Click on the links in the sidebar under “pages” for series info and downloads. I have many future plans, but don’t want to commit to anything before I get some of these done, so I won’t bother mentioning them (if someone happens to get to them before me, that just saves me work). I’m always open to suggestions, though, so feel free to drop me a note about something you’d like to see translated. I have really eclectic tastes, so I’m willing to check out just about anything, but I’m not going to take on a project if it doesn’t interest me at all. I’m also not interested in translating stuff that’s already been done or has an official English release, though I will consider picking up abandoned projects.

Release Schedule: For the majority of the series I’m working on, I try to post once a month, but I don’t have a set schedule beyond that. You can be notified of new releases by subscribing to the RSS feed for this blog, signing up for an account at Baka Updates, or following me on Twitter.

Contact Info: If you have questions or comments, feel free to email me or leave a comment on a post here or send me a DM on Twitter. (Sometimes I do not get comment notifications, so email is the best way to contact me.)

    Hey Megchan,

I don’t know if you remember me, but I was a huge fan of your old site “Megchan’s Digimon Sekai” when I was about 13. I remember being a fan of your art, and even submitting my own when you had a fanart section. Its great to see you’re still translating, and I’ve kept on drawing.

I listed my deviantart link if you’re interested in how I progressed! Lol. Sorry to be a creeper, I was just surprised you were still around on the net. Peace!

    Hello, Megchan!

Another digimon-era fan stopping by to say hello. I really loved your site back in the day…When I was 12-14, I used to visit your site all the time. I even remember a movement on the pojo.com forums where people begged others not to direct-link to your card scans because they were causing you bandwidth problems, or something like that.

I came across this site on accident. I always figured you were just a fan, not a professional translator. Super cool :) Keep up the good work and thanks for all the good times. My frequent visits to your site were a staple for me in those days, and I remember it fondly.

      Awesome, hi! :D

Yeah, I had so many bandwidth problems back in the day. Now I have pretty much unlimited bandwidth and storage, for less than I was paying per year back then, and I really wish I could have had the same resources! (Also it would have been awesome if stuff like youtube had been around back then, wouldn’t it? And wikis! My encyclopedia would have been so much awesomer and easier to maintain as a wiki!)

I actually translated Digimon. I thought everyone knew that! XD (I certainly didn’t make a secret of it.) Of course, because it was a kids’ show and shown on TV, my translations didn’t actually make it to the screen, but were just used as a base for the US writers to write a new script. But I translated all four of the original seasons and Digimon was my first pro translating job. (I actually gave up on pro translating earlier this year (and your comment reminded me to change the blurb here on this page), but I still do stuff in my free time.

Anyway, always super happy to hear from a Digimon fan. ♥

OMGSH SERIOUSLY?!!! You translated all four Digimon series and the writers used your translations as a template for their script?! YOU’VE GOT TO BE JOKING! Eeeeee!! I’m a major Digimon fan, I love love love the 1st and 3rd seasons! Omgsh omgsh, I feel like I’m meeting a celebrity now! XDDD Waaaah, even if your translations weren’t directly used, the fact that you translated Digimon is beyond awesome! xD

Okay, fangirl rant over. :3 But you truly are awesome. <3 Man, I wish I knew of your Digimon site back in the day. X3

Hi! I’m really happy you’re working on Saint Young Men! I went and bought the volumes because I loved it so much after I read your translations. :)

Out of curiousity, when did you start learning Japanese? Was it something you did in university, or did you self-study? Did you ever take the JLPT?

That’s so cool to be a professional translator. I’m working really hard to learn Japanese (mostly for personal enjoyment :3) and I was wondering how it was…like what kind of requirements do most places have, etc?

Sorry for the bombarding of questions! It’s just something I’ve been interested in, but I actually don’t know very many people who study Japanese as much as I do….save for my cousin.

    1. megchan Avatar
      megchan

Glad you’re enjoying Saint Young Men. Unfortunately I’ve decided not to continue with it, but I do plan to finish up volume one (just one more chapter), hopefully sometime within the next couple months.

Japanese was my major in college. I never took the JLPT; never even heard of it until years after I was already translating professionally, so not much point to it.

I don’t think most places have “requirements”, per se. They might do a sample test or something, but often I got jobs without any sort of skills test. I kind of lucked into becoming a translator, as it hadn’t really been something on my radar, but when I was still in college, I answered an ad for a translator at what was then Saban (now Disney) and started translating stuff for them. I did work for Saban/Disney for many, many years, and quite a few of the other jobs I had were through connections I made there. Unfortunately in recent years it became harder and harder to find any work, to the point where I was living off about $150 a week which I made translating for a scanlation group that was willing to pay me; I couldn’t find any other pro work. :( Then the group decided to stop scanlating, and I just decided to give up trying to translate for a living. Now I work in a Japanese grocery store (so still using my Japanese, at least) and just translate as a hobby (which I’m happy with, because I enjoy translating, and honestly, I rarely translated anything enjoyable when I was doing it for work, but when I’m doing it as a hobby, I can translate what I want, as well as taking on some commissions).

OMG! So someone is finally scanlating Yasha!!! I’m so happy~ Although it was 2 years since you started it, I honestly just found it out minutes before on pure happenstance when I checked out MangaTraders’ newest files rss list.

I’ve become obsessed with Yasha when I watched the J-dorama adaptation way, way, way back (I remember that I was in HS) and immediately hunt down the manga. To my chagrin, there’s no English translation/scanlation I could find and just settled with the HQ raw scans. I actually tried to find someone who’ll translate the series while I do everything else but no one wants to do it so it’s been sitting on my computer ever since. But now, NOW, ASDJFKDJFKSDFKSDJFLKSLS~ ILUVYOU ♥~

If you want/need a typesetter/editor/minion/servant/slave/worshipper, I can make time! Just shoot an email and I’ll be yours to command!

    1. megchan Avatar
      megchan

Yeah, I was surprised to find there was no scanlation of it (except a very badly done partial first volume) when I started, because I know that Banana Fish is pretty popular and I would think fans would be interested in reading more of the author’s work. (This is also why I’m surprised it’s not been licensed for official release in English, either.)

Anyway, if you’re serious about wanting to do the typesetting, etc. you can email me at kyuuketsukirui@gmail.com. I enjoy doing that work as well, but it does make things go faster when I’m just doing the translating.

Hey! Another Digimon fan here, though I don’t recall ever interacting with you directly, just seeing your name and website credited across the Digi-web. Good times, and wonderful memories. Thanks for all your work on Digimon in the past!
I just finished reading everything posted from Kodomo no Kodomo–I’ll definitely be sticking with it!–and when I noticed who did the scanlation, I had to come check and see if it was *the* Megchan. Even if doing it professionally isn’t working out anymore, good to hear you’re still enjoying it! I’m translating one series for Tsuki Scans, but that’s about all I can handle. You have my deep respect for managing so many aspects of these projects.

Hi! :D It’s always so great to hear from fellow Digimon fans, even if we didn’t necessarily interact back in the day. It was my first fandom and I look back on it with fond memories.

Haha, I think I tend to overextend myself and commit to more projects than I really should, but now that I am just doing translation for all but one and letting others handle the other aspects, it’s a bit more manageable. :D

    Hi there!
I wanted to thank you for taking the ‘ burden’ on you to translate the manga Gunjo. You have probably no idea how grateful I am.. I am so incredible happy, since I have been a fan from this manga for years, but all this time there came no translated update. Which saddened me, since it is the best manga I ever read.
However now you have taken it upon you to translate the manga! Really, I could kiss you a million times!
I am planning to donate some money, as a thank you gift, but first I need to find someone in my circle of friends who actually has a credit card..
I was also wondering.. which books did your college use to teach you the Japanese language? Because I plan to try and learn myself at least the basics of Japanese and maybe from there on I will take classes.
Thank you so much, again, and have a nice day!

    1. megchan Avatar
      megchan

I actually have been doing the translation on it the whole time, just the first volume was Kotonoha’s project and I was a “translator for hire”, so to speak, so I wasn’t in charge of the project, thus when he got overwhelmed with real life stuff, it just stalled out… :-/

It had been so long since we finished up volume one I was really afraid that no one was going to be interested anymore, so I’m so thrilled with the reception volume two has gotten so far. :) Any donations are appreciated, but so is your enthusiasm. Comments like yours make me so happy because my whole purpose in scanlating stuff is to share manga that I love with people who otherwise would never be able to read it.

I took Japanese a looooong time ago, so the textbooks that were in use at the time was the Learn Japanese series, which doesn’t seem to be published anymore. I thought they were good textbooks, but it seems like colleges nowdays are using the Genki series. Good luck with your studies!

Megchan! You’re still here! I randomly remembered your “name”. I’m here from your Digimon translating past to haunt you! I loved being able to understand what the hell I was seeing and hearing from Japan back then (so much easier now). I was/am a huge Ken fan (and Digimon in general) and didn’t mind checking out the Japanese versions of the media to get my fill. Listening to bad singing with Engrish didn’t bother me at all when I had your translations (although Romi Park was pretty good) and checking out the cards was awesome (even though I didn’t play, it still good Digimon reference). I know that people submit you a lot of projects and that you don’t have the time to take everything or are not interested in everything. Anyway, I’d like to draw your attention to the manga Boyfriend by Fuyumi Soryo. The scanlation has stopped since 2013, which is quite sad because this manga is really good and receives lots of praise. So if the story arises your interest and if you can even consider taking it someday, it would be wonderful.

I’m not going to bother you more. Just wanted to say thank you again for what you’re doing !

Hi! Firstly I’d like to thank you for translating Koiji! You guys make and amazing work and I adore this manga! Sometimes is hard to find a heart throbbing story when you’ve read so many mangas and webtoons haha…
It’ll like to suggest a manga. Is a Josei as well. The title is “ Ginban no Kishi”, by Ogawa Yayoi, the author of “Kimi wa Pet”, a very very nice manga. This one is about figure skating, same as her work “Kiss & Never Cry”, which, also, is a very catching manga that I read years ago when I was starting with Josei. I find very weird that nobody followed the translation (its translated unt chapter 14), even when Ogawa’s works are so good and the art is amazing. It’ll like you to at least consider it and if you haven’t read those mangas, well the. You’ll have something new and nice in your reading list ~. If you decide to work at that manga by any heavenly chance, it’ll be glad if I could be of any help. I could do redrawing and cleaning :). Anyways, it’ll be grateful if you check the manga out and again, thank you so much for your hard work!!

Thanks for the suggestions. I did love Kimi wa Pet back in the day, but have never read any of her other works, so I’ll have to check those out. Not sure about translating them, though, as I am overloaded on projects now and have other ideas for when I finish the current ones, too. But depending on how I like the series, it’s a possibility assuming someone else hasn’t taken it on before then.

Hi… Just finished reading one of Nishioka Kyodai’s manga, Jigoku. Saw it was done by you and thought I’d say thanks. Me-bug was also done by you, I think, thanks for that too . Yeah… That’s it. Keep doing what you do. Baii

    Hi, Megchan…

Searching by info from the old Kotonoha series found you :)

I just want to thank you for your work in Kotonoha. I loved it and it served me as a goal to achieve a work of equal quality in the spanish scanslation in which I participate. ;)

I even worked in Spanish some Kotonoha series … I hope it does not bother you. :p

A hug and thanks for your work.

Hi! I discovered you (you guys?) from Koi-iji on mangadex and I just wanted to say how much I appreciate your work! The typesetting, cleaning, all of that stuff is so beautifully done! Thanks for doing this!

Ooo, I forgot to mention I really like that you translate the small stuff that isn’t necessarily important. I like to read those types of things sometimes, like the afterwords and character relationship chart, and people don’t always translate it. I can see why, it’s a lot of work after all! Thanks again!

Yeah, that sort of stuff always feels like a pain to translate, but I hate just leaving untranslated pages… Glad to hear it’s appreciated! :)

Hey Megchan! Good to see you! Hey, a question about if you remember something from 18 years ago!

WAY back when, you hooked me up with some raw VHS. I am trying to remember a clip I saw around then, maybe something you had put on a tape as filler? It was a sentai style team of salarymen or something, fighting at a fairground. Each guy was wearing a business suit and briefcase, each with a color. Any idea what that might have been? I got it either from you or from Silvormoon… Anyway thanks and hope all is going great for you!

Hi! Unfortunately I don’t think that was me as it doesn’t sound familiar at all. However, I googled and I think this might be it:

Hi! I just wanted to a big thank you for translating Akimi Yoshida’s works. I’ve actually discover her from reading kisshou tennyo and since then I’ve been reading everything I can get my hands on from her- definitely one of my favorite manga-ka. Thanks for making her works more well known. Do you have any plans to translate her latest series – Umimachi Diary?

      megchan

I do enjoy her stuff and several titles of hers (including Umimachi Diary) are on my list of possible future projects, but I don’t have anything lined up for sure right now. I have several current projects that will be finishing up by early next year, so I’ll be picking up something new then, but I haven’t made any decisions on what yet.

Just chiming in to say thank you so much for translating Yasha! What a find, and I’m reading the sequel too. All because of watching Banana Fish (haven’t let myself read it yet because of the ending but I’ll break down soon and read it anyway.)

Yay, a new Yasha fan! :) I had been hoping that the revived interest in Banana Fish would lead to some new people discovering Yasha.

Just finished reading Nananan Kiriko’s Pumpkin and Mayonnaise. Loved it. I’m planning on reading all of her stuff. So I see at the bottom you worked on the translation and I think to myself I’ve seen the name somewhere and I wonder who this Megchan person is. I look the name up and end up finding this blog. I’m scrolling through the comments and apparently I was here before and I had left a comment! Thanking you for translating some of Nishioka Kyodai’ stuff. You mentioned there was more of the duo coming up, how’s that going? Anyway that’s it. Keep doing your thing and thanks again.

I think there is just one more volume of manga by Nishioka Kyodai that hasn’t been translated, Kodomo no Asobi. (We already released one story from that as a stand-alone.) I’m waiting on raws for that, but we do plan to translate it eventually. Currently we are working on a handful of shorts they did under the name of Sandy Crossword.

Hi there! Just wanted to say a big THANK YOU for all your translation work. You are a true hero. I think the effort you put into it is just totally praise-worthy. Salute to you!! If you’re considering what to do next after your ongoing projects, I think umimachi diary is a lovely series. If you’re interested, please do look into it. Again, thanks a heap!!

I am possibly interested in Umimachi Diary and several other people have asked me about it, due to my other translations of the author’s works, but right now I already have my next projects lined up, and I don’t have time for anything else.

Just wanted to thank you for translating “You will hear the voice of the dead”! It’s definitely one of my favourite mangas now, and I hope you’ll one day (perhaps) translate Uguisu- I mean, Hiyodori Sachiko’s other series. I understand you have other projects, though! ^_^/

…But yeah, thank you for your services! If I had money, I would’ve donated.

Hi, I was wondering do you guys know what is happening with the serialization of “Baby, Kokoro no Mama ni!” ? It’s one of my favorite mangas and it has been on hiatus for a long time now, so do we know if It’s because of the author health, or maybe did just gave birth or something like that ? Thanks :)

The author has taken a hiatus from drawing manga to raise her kids. She has actually uploaded a few pages of extras to the official website, which I plan to translate soon.

      Thanks for the heads up about that. No one asked me, but they posted it with the credits page, so I don’t mind. Anyone reading it on that site who thinks it’s going to be focused on the m/m relationship is going to be disappointed, though… ^_^;;
