New project: Gunjo

So, as you may or may not know, I collaborated on many projects with Kotonoha as translator, including Nakamura Ching’s Gunjo, which has been on hiatus for ages (according to Baka Updates, the final chapter of volume one was released over two years ago!), along with all of Kotonoha’s other projects.

Well, I recently spoke with Nomad Soul of Kotonoha and got his permission to continue Gunjo without him. I have the raws for vol. 2 and have the first chapter of it already translated, but what I really need is someone to do cleaning and typesetting and all that jazz, as I am already stretched so thin that I don’t think I could do it all on my own (or at least not in a timely manner).

So if you are interested, drop me a line at kyuuketsukirui@gmail.com.

I’m sorry, I don’t understand what you mean.

Sorry about that my hand slipped. So I was saying, Nakamura Ching’s Gunjo is yuri right? Are you interested in doing yaoi manga too? If so, how about Yami no kodou or by it’s other name Genwaku no Kodou manga it is yaoi with a great story line.

Oh, okay! I thought you were saying another group called Yami no Kodou was translating Gunjou or something!

Yes, Gunjo is yuri. I am generally interested in manga with queer characters (I’m gay myself), so I’m not opposed to doing a BL series, but I don’t like a lot of BL manga that I’ve read. :-/

But right now I really can’t take on any more projects! I shouldn’t even be considering Gunjo, but since it’s technically something I’ve already been working on (even if it was a collab before) I really want to see it through.

okay, thanks for all you hard work and if you ever get the chance there is some you can look at in english. Thanks for everything you do. I love himegoto manga.

Bamboo Feathers is picking up Yami no Kodou. If the series means that much to you, download the free Photoshop (it is an older version) and give them a hand!

Such a pity I can’t help (I’m bad at all the computer stuff, all I can do is some PR)! But I really liked this manga- the art is genuine, stunning! Thank you for taking it up!

Even if you can’t help, I’m glad to know there are people still interested in it! :)

So does this mean that Kotonoha is officially dead? I know when they’ve gone on (long) hiatus in the past, Nomad Soul always seemed to get very upset at other groups taking over their projects.

Not that I really had much hope left… But it’s sad to see them go.

There’s always a chance he will be able to get back to scanlating at some point, but it seems like it won’t be any time soon. :-/ I spoke with him back in June or so and asked him about the possibility of continuing Gunjo on my own and he said he wanted to try to get back to scanlating during the summer. But obviously that didn’t happen, and when I asked him this time, it seemed like he was finally admitting to himself that it just wasn’t going to happen. He gave me permission to continue any of our joint projects, but I don’t think I can take on anything other than Gunjo at this point. (And the one I would be most interested in after Gunjo is Umibe no Onna no Ko, which it looks like someone else has already taken over.)

I really enjoyed working with him, so I hope he has a comeback at some point, but who knows when that might be.

Glad to know there’s still people interested in this series! Hopefully it won’t be too long before I can get the first chapter out. (I already have the translation done for the next chapter (and in fact have had it done since back when Kotonoha was still releasing stuff!), so it’s just a matter of finding some time for cleaning & typesetting…)

Yes! Thank you so much for not letting this project die. I wish I could help you with the cleaning but school is driving me crazy.

Just saw your post on Kotonoha’s blog regarding Gunjo. Really appreciate that you’re willing to step up to the plate to finish this story after all these years. In terms of other yuri works is there any chance you’d be willing to do titles by Amano Shuninta such as The Feelings We All Must Endure by collaborating with other scanlators like Kawaii Scans? Supposedly this a problem with being understaffed which is why it takes them so long to release chapters and as a fan it comes to the point where you just can’t wait any longer. If you had a donation box i’m sure a few people would be more than happy to donate.

There’s also Kinokuniya bookstore in a city near mine. If you still don’t have the raws for Gunjo volume 3 i’d be more than happy to buy and mail it to you that is if it’s in stock.

I’ve been wanting to continue Gunjo for ages and really hoping that I could continue to work with Kotonoha, but even though that isn’t possible, I’m excited to finally be able to continue it in some form, even without him.

      As for other series, right now I’m really stretched pretty thin. I am already translating seven or eight things concurrently, some of which I’m also doing some or all of the cleaning and typesetting as well, so I absolutely can’t take on anything else. One of the series I’m working on should be done later this year, so I’ll see what’s what then, but I also have other series in my own “possible projects” folder on my hard drive, so… ^_^;;

There are Japanese bookstores in my area, but I don’t own a car and none of them are easy for me to get to anymore without one, so I was thinking of having a friend in Japan get vol. 3 of Gunjo for me, but if you can find it and would be willing to buy it, that would be really appreciated. If you find it, you can email me at kyuuketsukirui@gmail.com for my mailing address.

Either way, thanks for your comment! It’s good to see people are still interested after all this time! I hope to have the first chapter of volume 2 up in April. :)

I would be honored to try and get that final volume. My only worry is that although I hear the Japanese manga selection is quite large, I’m not too sure if they’ll be stocking such a niche title like this one. I’ll stop on by hopefully next week and see if they have it and give you a reply.

        1. megchan Avatar
          megchan

Yeah, unfortunately even the bigger Japanese bookstores in the US have a limited selection compared to what is actually available in Japan.

Sorry for the late reply but I was finally able to go to the Kinokuniya in Seattle yesterday. Apparently they didn’t have it in stock and even though the clerk said he would be able to do a special order, I wouldn’t be able to pick it up once I’m away for school. I’m really sorry for maybe getting your hopes up and wish you luck on securing the volume some other way. :(

Thanks for checking for me! I have a friend in Japan who has sent me manga before, so I’ll probably order it from Amazon delivered to her and then have her send it on to me (it’s cheaper that way than paying Amazon’s international shipping!). At any rate, these volumes are like double the length of a regular volume of manga, so I won’t be needing vol. 3 for a while yet. :)

I am so happy to hear this. After reading Gunjo I was so bummed that there were no more chapters of it anywhere on the web and latest scans were updated years ago. Despite (or maybe because) of it’s unusual style, it’s one of my favorite yuri mangas and one I haven’t been able to get out of my head. I want to know what happens to the protagonists now even if I know it’s most likely going to be something horrible or tragic or both.

Thank you for doing this. Can’t wait.

I’d like to leave message for Kotonoha here, since their website’s not working. Could they upload their “Window” oneshot to batoto? Since their site is not working, this thing seems to be lost forever (as well as maybe other potentially good works which I don’t know about yet).

I just found out this translation is being continued! Thanks so much for picking it up again, and double-thanks for noting Nomad Soul’s just busy. It was sad and a little worrying when the Kotonoha site finally went down. So… thanks for your fantastic work! :)

Yeah, it’s really sad that his site’s not around, but last I heard he was just overwhelmed with real life stuff and didn’t have time for scanlating anymore. (Which I can totally understand!)
